What Adventure will you create in 2017?

Whoa! We are halfway into January with the buzz of New Year’s resolutions, and crowded gyms already behind us.

As we get back into the flow of life, it’s a great time to ask ourselves about our vision for the year ahead. We will achieve so much more if we are intentional about where we want to go – rather than racing blindly from one day to the next.

What do I want to accomplish?
Where do I want to go?
Who do I want to serve?

To start answering these big questions – we first need to seek clarity on what we’ve already done. Yes – first – ask more questions! The BEST clues as to what will bring us joy, adventure and fulfillment in the days ahead are embedded in the life we have already lived. Below is a short list of questions to get you started.

I challenge you to carve out some time for your self, and start THINKING.

To a great 2015!

A Mountain of Courage

Giving a TEDx talk is a challenging adventure.

I enjoyed sharing some of my story and the stories of people I admire – those who have had the courage to embrace and excel in the face of difficult change. It has been rewarding and inspiring to hear from the Traverse City attendees that my talk gave them language, and a visual image, for where they are in their own journey of change. I also met some very talented people among my fellow TEDx Traverse City speakers, who I will introduce to you in the days ahead.

By watching ‘A Mountain of Courage’ you will learn more about my personal journey – the journey that led me to create Courageous Thinking Inc. Every day I am energized by the challenge of assisting adventurous leaders who seek excellence in their personal growth, and strive for success in their organizations.

Big Ten Network interview’s RTLI co-founder Linda Lindquist-Bishop

The Big Ten Network recently asked University of Illinois alumni Linda Lindquist-Bishop why she calls the leadership institute she co-founded ‘Rising Tide?’

Linda explains, “Our goal is to improve everyone’s life by improving women’s lives. A rising tide lifts all boats.”

“To add more women leaders to the equation we can’t just inspire and equip – we also have to change the acceptance for what women can achieve, with those who can provide or prevent access for women at the leadership table.”

Competing on the high-tech, high-performance sailing, aviation and motor sports platforms equips women for leadership, creates acceptance for their abilities at the leadership table, and inspires other women to step up and lean in to leadership opportunities.

The Hail Mary of Innovation: Google X

Google glassesLast week I had the opportunity to watch the future in action. As a Google Glass wearing friend took my picture, posted it to Instagram and emailed it to me – all with a hands-free one sentence voice command.

Exploring the opportunities, implications and risk of this technology is and will fill volumes, courtrooms and lawsuits. Today we look at ‘where did this technology come from?’
Read More.

Inside the halls of Google X lies a very different organizational culture, structure and breed of people that are developing, trying to break and launching new breakthrough technology. Take a look:

  • CAPTAIN OF MOONSHOTS:  Now there’s a business card to aspire to! Expectations of success are extremely low – but if/when they come – the results are world changing.
  • FAILING IN FULL VIEW:  When Leadership can fail in full view, then it gives everyone permission to be more like that.
  • RAPID EVALUATION:  ‘Why put off failing until tomorrow or next week when you can fail now?’ Encourage those who admit mistakes or defeat in group meetings.
  • THE TEAM:  People who want to build stuff and who aren’t easily daunted.

Google is uniquely equipped at a unique moment of history with the potential to create world changing innovation. Once you eliminate the fear of failure – anything is possible!
